Frequent Masturbation Raises Prostate Cancer Risk in Young Men

Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Young men who have frequent sex -- including masturbation -- may be raising their risk of prostate cancer, British researchers said.

Men who ejaculated at least 20 times a month in their 20s and 30s were more likely to be diagnosed with the cancer later in life, according to a study from the University of Nottingham in BJU International.

Masturbation accounted for most of the differences in the cancer rates, in contrast to research that raised a connection between frequent intercourse and prostate cancer. The link is related to men’s hormone levels, which play a role in both the cancer and sex drive, said the researchers led by Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, now at the University of Cambridge.

“We found a significant association between prostate cancer and sexual activity in a man’s 20s and between masturbation and prostate cancer in the 20s and 30s,” Dimitropoulou said in a statement.

Prostate cancer, the most common tumor in men, is often treated with drugs that reduce levels of hormones that are produced by the testicles and fuel cancer cell growth. The walnut-sized prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. About 186,320 new cases will be diagnosed this year in the U.S. and 28,660 men will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society.

The study involved 840 men, including 431 diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 60. The participants were surveyed about their sexual habits from the age of 20, including when they became sexually active, how often they masturbated, how many partners they had and whether they acquired any sexually transmitted diseases.

About 34 percent of men with prostate cancer said they masturbated often in their 20s, compared with 24 percent of those without the tumors. In the study, almost 60 percent of men in both groups said they had sex at least 12 times a month during their 20s.

The cancer risk dropped off when men reached their 40s, with some signs that sex was protective for those aged 50 and older.

The study conflicts with some research. A 2004 study from Harvard University found men who reported frequent sexual activity had a 33 percent lower cancer risk.
